  Silly weight-loss diets, like all fads, come and go. If you’re tempted by one of these dieting disasters (perhaps you’ve tried one, and been less than satisfied with the results), here are the alternatives.

1. The Cabbage Soup Diet. This weight-loss diet seemed like such a great idea: eat nothing but cabbage soup for a week and watch the pounds melt away. However, by the second or third day, the sight of the soup had most of us running to the vending machines. (Not only was the diet monotonous, many of us reacted to cabbage in a flatulent way.)

The alternative is to make sure you load up on a variety of healthy, non-starchy vegetables at meals and snack time.

2. The Cookie Diet. This weight-loss diet sounds like every dieter’s dream: Eat a cookie and lose weight. However, depending on which version of the diet you follow, you may end up with cookies with unknown ingredients and dubious nutritional value. In addition, you may end up paying exorbitant prices for cookies that taste like cardboard — or worse.

The alternative is to allow yourself a small snack (i.e., a small "real" cookie) each day and focus the rest of the day on healthy foods.

3. The Magic Berry Diet. This weight-loss diet, touted on many talk shows, says that by ingesting this magical fruit, you will "rev your metabolism" and drop pounds incredibly fast.  While the jury is still out on whether this particular diet really works, the product can be very expensive.

5.  The No-Carbohydrate Diet. This weight-loss diet involves eliminating all bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and cereal. While it’s true that cutting back on carbohydrates can help you lose weight quickly, totally eliminating them can affect your metabolism and your memory.

The alternative is to cut back on processed foods, such as white bread and white rice, substituting them with whole grain versions.

6. The Diet Pill Diet. The various versions of this weight-loss diet say you can eat all you want, whenever you want and still lose weight — as long as you ingest this miracle pill or potion. Of course, these products are expensive and you’ll likely regain all the weight you lost once you stop taking the pill. Further, many of these diet products have "secret" ingredients that could cause health problems down the road.

The alternative is to take your time and lose weight sensibly: Eat a balanced diet, cut out snacks and second-helpings and be sure to add some daily exercise.

7. The Cereal Diet. Some cereal companies have promoted the notion that by eating their supposedly nutritious cereal twice daily can help you drop pounds. The commercials touting these weight-loss diets sure sound convincing. However, once you read the nutrition labels you’ll find that the cereal actually does not offer much by way of vitamins, minerals or other nutrients.

The alternative is to eat a balanced diet, emphasizing proteins, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
